The cost of gym memberships varies from one town to the next. There are also exclusive gyms that charge huge sums and bargain chains that almost pay you to go to the gym a few times a week. However, irrespective of what gym you go to, there will always be at least one person who is guilty of the ultimate workout sin – spending less on their gym clothes than their monthly gym membership!
You can spot this person a mile off. They are:
- Uncomfortable – low quality workout clothes seldom fit properly
- Hot – good quality gym clothes let your skin breathe
- Restricted – poor quality workout gear does not move with you and can tie you in knots
- Drenched – while good quality workout wear wicks sweat away from your skin so you stay dry, low quality material traps it next to your skin so you feel damp and clammy
- Unhappy – low quality workout gear doesn’t look as good as good quality workout gear and looking good makes you feel good!
There really is no excuse for suffering the ill-effects of low-quality workout gear. Good workout gear is widely available, comes in a variety of colours, materials and styles to suit all exercisers, and while you need to accept that you are going to have to spend some money to look and feel good, it’s not as expensive as you might think – especially if you shop at Anax Fitness.
Workout wardrobe minimums
Because workout wear is easy to wash and dries fast, you don’t need lots and lots of gym clothes. You do, however, have to make sure you have got your bases covered!
Outer layer – a hoodie and jogging pants will ensure you arrive at the gym feeling warm and comfortable. Once you are warmed up, you can ditch this outer layer to avoid getting too hot and sweaty. Pop it back on when it’s time to go home so you don’t get cold.
Mid layer – whether you prefer shorts or legging, a t-shirt or vest, your mid layer needs to be up to the job of exercising. Cotton might be natural but is soaks up water like a sponge and can quickly become waterlogged, restrictive, heavy and uncomfortable. Instead, invest in technical materials designed to wick away moisture, move with you, and keep you cool.
Base layer – regular underwear simply isn’t up to the rigours of exercise. It will gather up, bunch, and rub, and you’ll end up feeling restricted, self-conscious and uncomfortable. A quality base layer, such as compression shorts or a sports bra, will support you and ensure that all of your “bits and pieces” stay right where they should!
Workout shoes – your shoes should offer shock absorbency and support and be light enough not to slow you down. With so many types of shoes to choose from it can be hard to know where to start but you can’t go wrong with a good pair of cross trainers.
There is nothing wrong with hunting out a bargain but it’s a mistake to skimp on your gym or bodybuilding clothing. If you are paying for a gym membership, you owe it to yourself not to let your workout clothes hold you back. If you LOOK the part, you will FEEL the part and get so much more from your workouts as a result.
