March 2020 marked a significant change in our lives as we once knew them. The Coronavirus became a true pandemic and the world seemingly went on lockdown. Where there are still some lockdowns currently in effect after 5 months of quarantine, some places, including the gym are beginning to reopen. However, the gym you once knew has gone through some noticeable changes. We must all do our part to stop this virus from spreading, so here are tips on how to return to your gym routine safely after quarantine.
Wear a Mask
We have all heard the arguments regarding how uncomfortable masks are, but it remains a fact that when everyone wears a mask, the spread of COVID-19 can be significantly slowed down. That being said, a cloth mask is going to have to become a part of your workout gear. Find a mask that is comfortable and light to wear, but one that still offers protection. It will take some getting used to, but it is very possible to have a high quality workout while wearing a mask.
The type of mask you use can make a difference as well. Invest in a high quality mask with a PM2.5 filter and various layers of protection. Filters with 4 or 5 layers of protection are ideal for social interaction with others and keeping you protected.
Social Distancing is Essential
Apart from the obvious need to wear a mask while around others, the necessity of social distance is apparent as well. Social distancing is not merely the buzz word of 2020, but something we must all embrace. Space is your friend during this current pandemic and maintaining distance from others, especially while at the gym is very important. Gyms can sometimes pack many machines in one space making it difficult to maintain proper spacing, but it is up to you to maintain distance by choosing a machine that is away from others working out. The same notion can be used in the weightlifting area. It is vital that you maintain distance from others throughout the gym.
Schedule Your Workout According to Peak Periods
Every gym has times where they are full and times where there are not as many people in the facility. Do not be afraid to ask the staff at your local gym when off times are where there are not as many people in the gym. They will know and you can change your routine to accommodate that time. With more people working from home these days, it is easier to adjust your work schedule to fit your workout needs. You may also be required to make a reservation depending on your gyms capacity, so be sure to make your reservations as early as possible to ensure you get a spot.
Wipe Down Equipment
This is supposed to be standard practice in most gyms, but today, it is even more important. When returning to the gym after quarantine, keep in mind that anywhere between 25% and 50% of people infected with COVID-19 remain asymptomatic, meaning they have the Coronavirus, but are not showing symptoms. These people can still spread the virus, but may not ever experience any symptoms, so when you choose to use a piece of equipment at the gym wipe it down before use and after use to ensure you will not infect someone else and whoever used the equipment before you will not infect you.
Hands Off Your Face
Research into COVID-19 has proven that most infections enter the body through the mouth, eyes, and nose, so when you touch things throughout the gym and then touch your own face, you risk infections. Keep your hands off your face at all costs. Use a towel to wipe away sweat or have disinfectant wipes on hand at all times.
Wash Your Hands
This seems like a no brainer, but in the times we live in, it never hurts to remind people to wash their hands and wash them often. 20 seconds of good scrubbing on your hands with antibacterial soap is the best way to avoid possible contamination. Take the time after using the restroom or doing any activity at the gym to properly wash your hands.
Start Slow
Even if you have been actively keeping up with your overall workout routine at home while on quarantine, it is unlikely you have worked out as hard as you would if you were at the gym. This means you must start slowly when returning to the gym. It will not take long for you to return to your normal high intensity routine, but give your body ample time to adjust before you hit the machines, cardio, and weight lifting at full force.
You can safely return to the gym while protecting yourself against the Coronavirus. Take the time to understand the restrictions your gym may have in place and follow all guidelines they suggest to keep you and others at the gym as safe as possible.
